\u2018Fra il XVII sec. e la prima met\u00e0 del XVIII, the Shoulder Cello was a popular instrument among violinists, se non altro per l\u2019estensione di opportunit\u00e0 che offriva loro.<\/p>\n

They used it to play the bass line, accompaniments and also solo obligatory parts. Composers wrote sonatas and concertos for this instrument or that could be played on it and it was widely used as an obligatory instrument in church or chamber cantata arias.<\/p>\n

I violoncellisti\/violinisti del nord italia viaggiavano tutta l\u2019Europa. Caldara left their traces in Catalonia, Bononcini e Dall\u2019Abaco. The violinist, violoncellista da spalla e ricercatrice Diana Roche di Barcellona sta compiendo una ricerca riguardo ad una vasta produzione di cantate da chiesa di compositori catalani che impiegavano regolarmente il violoncello piccolo a cinque corde in parti solistiche e obbligate fra il tardo XVII e la met\u00e0 del XVIII secolo.<\/p>\n

We still have some instruments in museums that are very similar to the cello da shoulder that we use today. Those built by Johann Christian Hoffman, friend and luthier of Johann Sebastian Bach, sono soltanto i pi\u00f9 famosi e pertinenti. We have information on five of these instruments: unfortunately two were lost during the war. Of those that still exist today, uno \u00e8 a Lipsia, one in Brussels and one in Berkeley. Uno di questi cinque figura nell\u2019inventario alla morte di Carl Philip Emanuel Bach, e un altro \u00e8 stato propriet\u00e0 del Thomaskantor fino alla seconda guerra mondiale\u2019. <\/p>\n
